The Visit to the Museum

This project is a series of illustrations I made for a class assignment based on the short story The Visit to the Museum by Vladimir Nabokov in 2024.

The story unfolds through a chronological timeline, following the main character’s repeated visits to the museum on a rainy day in Montisert, driven by his intent to purchase a portrait from Gustave Leroy for his friend. Several contrasts captured my attention throughout the narrative—disorientation versus sequence, somberness versus brightness, peace versus chaos, interior versus exterior, and the interplay of scale distortions within the museum displays. Based on these contrasts, I proposed presenting the story on a folded panel that documents the museum through a perspective sectional drawing. The unfolded sections highlight the brightness of the interior space, while the folded portions depict the tone of the somberness of the exterior environment.
